The Temporary Widow’s Guide to Love, Berlin, and Islands in the Aegean
In the late spring of 1989, Lyddie’s husband, Phelps, disappears in Kurdish Iraq, leaving her alone and pregnant with the child he persuaded her to have. An exhibition she is curating at the Albright Knox in Buffalo reawakens memories of an earlier life in Berlin and of the bohemian circle of East-German artists and writers Phelps once warned her away from. Not knowing whether her husband is alive or dead, Lyddie returns to a divided Berlin, where the ferment at Germany’s borders is spilling over into the private lives of the people she once knew there. She finds herself attracted all over again to exiled artist Axel Herzog, whose stories of Greek mystics and of a tormented life in the East once made him as irresistible to her as he was forbidding.
Even as Lyddie struggles with her own sense of conflicting allegiances, revelations about Axel’s past prove almost as disturbing as Phelp’s disappearance. She retreats to an island in the Aegean with Sabina, a single mother and one-time lover of Axel’s. When news of Phelps reaches her and Axel turns up without warning, Lyddie finds she has been running headlong into all she has tried to avoid. As the Berlin Wall is breached, Lyddie and Axel and Sabina circle one another warily amid the stark beauty of the Cycladic landscape, their fates hanging on the question of which trusts, if any, will remain unviolated.
